    Pediatric Scoliosis / Kyphosis
Scoliosis is a type of spinal disorder that causes spine to be deformed. This deformation is seen as a lateral curvature of the spine. Kyphosis is another type of spinal disorder that bends the upper part of the vertebrae which causes a hump in the person’s back.
    Pediatric Scoliosis
Pediatric scoliosis is a term used to denote a lateral curvature of a baby’s spine which makes the child seem to be perpetually bending sideways. It is said to be scoliosis only if the spine is curved sideways by more than 10 degrees. Baby’s middle & lower vertebrae are affected in pediatric scoliosis.
    Pediatric Kyphosis
Paediatric Kyphosis is defined by a bend in the back of a child to the front. In this type of disorder, the child’s spine could be bent forward more than 50 degrees. This is caused by the bending of upper & middle vertebrae of the child’s spinal column. Severe forms of Kyphosis may cause problems associated with breathing & lungs due to the undue pressure exerted on the rib cage.
    Difference between Scoliosis & Kyphosis
Main difference between scoliosis & kyphosis is that in scoliosis the person’s spine is bent laterally (sideways) while a person suffering from kyphosis shows the spine to be bent towards the front (hunchback).
Symptoms of Pediatric Scoliosis & Kyphosis
Scoliosis is divided into three types –

    • Idiopathic Scoliosis – This is the more common type of scoliosis. The exact cause has not been established although genetics are found to be the main factor in causing idiopathic scoliosis.
    • Congenital Scoliosis – This type of scoliosis is detected at birth. It is a rare type of scoliosis.
    • Neuromuscular Scoliosis – This is more severe form of scoliosis. In this type the curvature of the spine is caused by abnormal growth of muscles & nerves that support the spinal column. Patients with this type of scoliosis are likely to develop spina bifida, muscular dystrophy or cerebral palsy.

    Symptoms of Pediatric Scoliosis

    • Uneven shoulder height
    • Uneven length of legs
    • Constant leaning to one side
    • Abnormally prominent shoulder blade
    • Uneven waist

Kyphosis is also divided into three types –

    • Postural Kyphosis – A mild form of kyphosis usually occurring in adolescents. This type of kyphosis may cause a little discomfort but pain is rarely felt. It is mostly caused due to poor posture. It is more common among girls.
    • Scheuermann’s Kyphosis – This type of kyphosis affects children in his / her growth stages. It causes vertebrae to become wedge-shaped rather than rectangular which is deemed to be normal. Scheuermann’s kyphosis is more likely to affect boys.
    • Congenital Kyphosis – This type of kyphosis affects in fetal stages. The child’s vertebrae may be fused together or malformed in a similar way in this type.

Children suffering from severe form of kyphosis are likely to develop defects in heart & kidneys.
    Symptoms of Pediatric Kyphosis

    • More severe cases show a visible bump in the back, like a hunch
    • Some cases require imaging tests such as X-ray so as to determine the type of kyphosis
    • Pulmonary & breathing tests are required to determine if kyphosis is present & affecting the lungs

Causes of Pediatric Scoliosis & Kyphosis
    Causes of Pediatric Scoliosis

    • Idiopathic type of scoliosis is related to genes. It is hereditary in nature.
    • Non-structural scoliosis is when spine appears curved. This can be caused by differences in length of legs, appendicitis or even muscular spasms.
    • Structural scoliosis occurs as a result of another disorder which causes spine to bend laterally.

    Other Causes of Pediatric Scoliosis

    • Neuromuscular disorders like Cerebral Palsy or Muscular Dystrophy
    • Birth defects like hemivertebra that cause a side of the vertebrae to grow uneven
    • Injury
    • Infections
    • Tumors on Spine (Neurofibromatosis)
    • Metabolic Diseases
    • Rheumatic Disorders
    • Connective Tissue Disorders

    Causes of Pediatric Kyphosis

    • Osteoporosis
    • Disk Disintegration
    • Scheuermann’s Disease
    • Birth Defects
    • Marfann Syndrome or Prader-Willi Disease
    • Slouching causes Postural Kyphosis
    • Spinal Cancer

How is Pediatric Scoliosis & Kyphosis Treated?
    Scoliosis Treatment

    • Most Mild – forms of scoliosis might not need to be treated as they do not cause any kind of discomfort.
    • Observation – In this the doctor observes the child for any outward signs of severe scoliosis.
    • Bracing – Moderate spinal curvature require a brace to be worn so as to keep curvature in check.
    • Surgery – More severe forms of scoliosis need corrective surgery on the spinal column so as to restrict abnormal curvature.

    Kyphosis Treatment
Treatment for kyphosis depends on the type of condition & symptoms exhibited by the child.

    • Medication – In cases where cause of kyphosis is found to be another disorder.
    • Corrective – As children have a growing body, doctors suggest use of braces to keep curvature in check.
    • Surgery – In severe cases of kyphosis the doctor may suggest a corrective surgical procedure. This includes Spinal Fusion, in which the affected vertebrae are fused together through surgery in order to stop further curvature & compression.
